Getting Around Stockholm

There are a number of transportation options in Stockholm, with the best transportation option to and from Arlanda Airport being the Arlanda Express. The Arlanda Express connects Arlanda Airport with Stockholm Central Station. The entire trip takes about 20 minutes. The train runs four times an hour, and five times an hour during peak times.

From Stockholm Central Station, you can get anywhere in Stockholm by using their Metro. The Stockholm Metro consists of three lines: Red, Blue, and Green. Any of these lines will take you in and around central Stockholm and out to some of the suburbs.

Stockholm also has a light rail system that you can use to get around the city. The light rail system has three lines, as well as one tramline, all of which can be used to get around various parts of central Stockholm.

For destinations not served by Metro, light rail, or tram, Stockholm's bus network is a good option. There are numerous bus lines that serve the central city and the suburbs. Regular city buses are painted red, while inner city bus lines and suburban bus lines that connect to transportation hubs in the city are painted blue.

If you're planning on traveling out to some of the suburbs in Stockholm, the fastest way may not be by bus or Metro, but by suburban rail. Suburban rail reaches the outer suburbs, and consists of eight lines on three different systems. These are frequently used by commuters, but can also be good if you're visiting someone in the suburbs or staying there yourself and need a convenient way to get to central Stockholm.

Stockholm is also an excellent city to explore by bike. The main attractions and most popular sights are concentrated in a relatively small area, making it easy to navigate. Stockholm has a bike share program in place from April to October. Called City Bikes, it allows you to rent a bike for several hours, a day, or longer, and then return it to any station when you're finished.

With all of the various waterways in the city of Stockholm, it may come as no surprise that some of the best forms of transportation are aquatic-based. Ferries and boats are ideal for getting to and from different areas of the city. The Djurgårdsfärjan boat line is most convenient, as it offers service in central Stockholm between Slussen and Djurgården.
